How much will my website cost?

This can be highly variable depending on the project scope and complexity. We work with all types of businesses to find a cost-effective solution. Website designs and development start at $1,500 for HTML Based designs and $2,000 for WordPress based designs.

How long does it take to build a website?

Every website is different, and varies based on design, type, and your requirements. However, the typical informational website takes about 7-30 days to complete because it’s designed & built specifically for you.

Will my website be search engine friendly?

Yes. Every website be it HTML based or CMS built will be fully Search Engine Index-able and we take great care in ensuring you have a strong foundation to build upon.

Will my website be mobile compatible?

Yes. Every website we build is fully-responsive and works beautifully on mobile phones, tablets and desktop computers.

Why don't you like Adobe Flash?

Mainly because it tempts companies to break all the rules of user experience and best practices. What do people use Flash for? Long load times, splash screens, animations of fireworks, auto-playing videos and music, sound effects, a user experience that users have no control over, and a complete lack of compatibility with Apple devices. These are all no-no’s.

Flash represents everything that’s wrong with the web, and it hasn’t really had any fundamental upgrades since it was first introduced in 1996. There are a few uses for Flash that are still appropriate, for example, as a mechanism for uploading files to a server, or an online photo editor, internet radio stations, etc… but more often than not, it’s simply abused.

I also have some major concerns over the fact that Adobe Flash is closed-source proprietary software, and therefore renders users dependent on a licensed, copyrighted program. There is just no compelling reason to use Flash on most websites. Almost everything Flash could do can now be accomplished with other technologies such as HTML5 and Javascript.

If you completely convinced that you need Flash to build your website, feel free to contact me and I’ll see if there’s a way around it. Trust me—you’ll appreciate it, your users will appreciate it, and you’ll look smarter a few years down the road.

My old web guy could (fill in the blank). Can't you?

This is one of the weirdest questions I’m asked and it really pops up quite a bit actually. I hate being asked about this.

Usually, a client will start off by telling about some totally bizarre “skill” or feature that his old webmaster had, and I’ll be asked if I can do the same thing with the website I’m building him. This question takes a lot of strange forms too…

…I’ve been asked if I can get a competitor’s website blacklisted, if I can guarantee first-page rankings on Google, if I can turn a PowerPoint Presentation with animations into a website, and more. Generally my response to these kinds of questions are “Umm, no, and I wouldn’t advise that you try to do this either.”

For some reason, people treat this like some sort of challenge; like I’m apparently not as smart as the “old” webmaster. My favorite response of all time was the guy who told me “my daughter works at Google, so if you can’t figure it out, I’ll just call her and see what she says.”

I refuse to knowingly break the terms of service for Google Search Engine Rankings, and to act in bad faith when registering domains. If you choose to wade into the murky waters yourself, I can’t stop you. I really don’t recommend trying to game the system or hack things. And if your old webmaster was really such a smart guy, feel free to give him a call. I’m just not your guy.

* How should I prepare for building a website?

Oh man. This is a question nobody ever asks, but I really wish people would. It would make everyone’s job easier. Oftentimes the hardest part of my job is trying to get content from a customer. And that puts me in a spot I don’t want to be in (nagging) and puts the customer in the spot they don’t want to be in either (behind schedule, causing delays).

Start right now. Create a folder on your computer. Call it “New Website” and start putting stuff in it. Everything about your company that you think customers may find interesting. Logos, product photography, portraits of the staff, company brochures, Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs), documents, and more. It’s always better to have too much than too little (and in my experience, there’s always too little and never too much).

Start asking your current customers why they choose you and why they bought your products. How did they find you in the first place? Why did they buy from you instead of the competition? Get the answers to these questions and use this data to help tell the story of why people buy your products and why they should if they haven’t yet. Ask your customers if they’d be willing to write a quick testimonial about their experience with you.

If you can get this kind of info together in a folder, then send it to me via e-mail to me, if the files are too large burn a disc and mail it to me, you’ll be off to a better start than 95% of the customers I’ve worked with in the past.

* I have a site built from Square Space etc.. Can you install WordPress there?

Simply put NO!

Square Space and other DIY website builders/platforms do not allow for any other website to be installed on their hosting servers. Your are bound to their options. You would need a new hosting account and have your domain name redirected.

* How can I make my website compelling for users?

I really wish people would ask this question. It’s so much more important than the other questions I get about boosting Search Engine Rankings.

This one is quite simple to answer. Put yourself in the customers shoes. What to they want? Do they want to hear you drone on about how your product is “the highest quality”? Or do they want to view a video demo of how to use your awesome software that will balance their checkbook? Here’s a hint: it’s not the first option.

Customers want to be serenaded and wooed, like a Juliet looking out of her balcony as Romeo comes out of the bushes below and turns up the romantic heat and sings of his undying love for her. Silly metaphor? Sure. But it’s true. People are emotional. They want you to fight for their business, not just preach to them from a list of bullet points that your PR department made. Show them real-life examples. Calculate the return on investment for them. Give them a risk-free trial or a money-back guarantee.

Then, when all that is done, make it easy for them to check out. If I had a nickel for every time I wanted to buy something but a website made made it difficult for me… I would shop somewhere else. Don’t do this! It hurts your business! Ask your wife or neighbor to sit down in front of your computer and try to use your website. Just take a moment to see where he/she clicks. Write down some notes and then respond to what you saw. Say to yourself: “Aha—she tried to click on the image on the top right. Why did she do that? She must have thought it would actually take her somewhere. Maybe I’ll make it a link, or remove it.”

Also, please speak in plain English. It’s insulting when you don’t. When you confuse or insult your users, they won’t buy from you. Take all the pretentious tech-speak out and put in real, live, conversational English. Do people like to call 800 numbers and listen to recordings? No. They like talking to a live human being. Why? Because they speak “real” English. It’s not cold, callous and pre-recorded. It actually makes sense. Please do this with your website as well.

* Will I be able to manage my own website?

Of-course if its a WordPress based site and you have basic HTML knowledge. We don’t force you to hire us to make future changes, and can actually provide the training necessary to make most updates to your website. Just let us know if this option sounds like something you are interested and we will incorporate it into the quote. HTML based sites will require code knowledge and FTP access.

* What are your payment terms?

We work with you to make your investment cash-flow friendly. Depending on project scope, usually 30% to 50% down and the remainder prior to delivery.

* Who owns my website after it's built?

Great question! It can become a pretty messy legal situation if you’ve hired someone to build you a website but the ownership isn’t clear. That’s why when I build you a website, I keep it very clear: you own the front and I own the back. Intellectual Property Law says that all the content you provide is yours anyway, and I would never even claim to own any of it. But in that same vein, all the code and markup I write for your website is owned by me, and you are given a non-exclusive license to use it as long as I’ve been paid for my work. It’s that simple. That’s the way it works with every other piece of software you’ve ever bought. (If you don’t believe me, read the EULA next time you install a program).

This protects both of us. Because you own your content, I’m not liable for anything you say and because my code belongs to me, I’m the one responsible for writing it properly and debugging it if anything ever goes wrong. That’s the way you want it.

If you and I ever stop working together, that’s fine—you still own your license to the code. I’ll give you your files on a disc and you can go your merry way.

We plan, strategize, design, and develop all of our websites be it from scratch or a template to ensure a product tailored to your needs.

* Can you host my website & email for me?

We are working on this but at this time we suggest you have your own hosting plan, we can help walk you through the process.
